Welcome

The Montgomery College Adult ESOL & Literacy Grant Program seeks to provide lifelong learning opportunities to adults who are in need of language and literacy skills in order to fulfill their roles as family members, workers, and active community participants. We strive to provide the best quality education possible to all learners, and will do this regardless of race, religion, marital status, disability, sexual preference, or national origin. Our goal is to help our learners help themselves by accomplishing whatever objectives they set for themselves

Programs

ESOL Program

The Adult ESOL Program is divided into six levels. Classes ESOL Literacy through ESOL Intermediate II are free; students do, however, have to pay for their own textbooks should they want to buy them.

GED Preparation Program

The Adult Basic Education Program is divided into three basic levels, Adult Basic Education, Pre-GED® Test Preparation and GED® Test Preparation. Adult Basic Education and Pre-GED® Test Preparation are free; students do, however, have to pay for their own textbooks should they want to buy them.

Citizenship Program

AELG offers Citizenship Preparation Classes to help students with the civics skills and language skills needed to pass the citizenship interview and exam.

TESOL Training Program

The TESOL Training Institute at Montgomery College provides a high-quality innovative educational program that will enable individuals, in a supportive and challenging environment, to become highly competent instructors of adult ESOL.

WorkPlus: English & Job Skills

WorkPlus, English & Job Skills programs provide opportunities for adult ESOL students to improve their English language skills and work toward gainful employment in the American workplace. Students must attend a registration & orientation session to learn about the programs,

AELG Resources

Students need to show that they are ready to learn by attending class regularly. Regular attendance is also important for students to make progress. Students should not register for a class if they do not expect to attend all the classes. If a student misses the first two classes, the student will lose his or her space. That student will be given information about registering for the next session, but will not be allowed to return during the current session. Students who arrive more than 30 minutes late for class—or leave more than 30 minutes early—will be marked as absent, except during a weather emergency.  

The table below indicates the maximum number of classes students may be absent from a given class.

Computer LabCommunity Use Computer Labs (MCPS)
At this time only GED® Test Preparation Classes have been granted access to MCPS computer labs. If your class will be utilizing MCPS computer labs you will be notified by your Site Administrator and/or Program Director.


Montgomery College - Campus Computer Labs (excluding Westfield South)
At this time only GED® Test Preparation Classes have been granted access to MCPS computer labs. If your class will be utilizing MCPS computer labs you will be notified by your Site Administrator and/or Program Director.


Montgomery College - Mobile Labs
There are two AELG mobile labs available for use one located at Westfield South and one located on Rockville campus. GED® Test Preparation Classes have priority use of these labs. If you teach at Westfield South and are interested in using the mobile lab please contact your Program Director.


Montgomery College - Westfield South Computer Lab (306C)
This lab is open to both ESOL and GED® Test Preparation Classes. However GED® Test Preparation Classes have priority use of this lab. To reserve the computer lab at Westfield South for your class(es) complete the Computer Lab reservation Form. CRNs are required to complete reservations.  Reservation requests must be submitted at least three weeks (fifteen working days - excluding, weekends, holidays and/or AELG office closings) prior to the date you need CONFIRMATION.  Lab use may not begin before confirmation is received via e-mail.

  • College general information, reminders, academic calendars, etc
  • Montgomery College Professional Development calendar (workshops and trainings) This is different than the AELG Professional Development calendar.
  • Payroll information and schedule
  • Paystub (breakdown)
  • Parking
  • Employee ID number (M number)
  • Human Resources forms (I-9, change of address, direct deposit, etc)
  • Montgomery College notices news and events.

Parking Permits are required on the following Montgomery College Properties:

Parking is FREE at:

  • Gaithersburg Business Training Center (GBTC)
  • Westfield South (Wheaton)

Temporary parking permits for AELG students during registration and the first few weeks of class will be provided by the AELG office. If you have not received parking information for you class within one week of registration please contact Simon.Lee@montgomerycollege.edu

AELG Weather and Closing Policy

If Montgomery College (MC) is closed...there are no classes at any site.

  • Go to www.montgomerycollege.edu or call 240-567-5000 (A recorded message will be available too) to check for closures.
  • If you would like to receive text message or e-mail alerts about college closures, you may register at http://alert. montgomerycountymd.govnew window, ALERT is a free service (text message rates apply).
  • Students taking classes on Montgomery College Property will be notified by their teachers.  Montgomery College Property includes: Gaithersburg Business Training Center, Germantown Campus, Rockville Campus, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, and Westfield South.

If Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) are closed -OR- evening activities are canceled, there are no classes at these sites.

  • Go to www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org; to check for closures.
  • Gaithersburg Judy Center, Borher Parent Center, and Gilchrist Cultural Center follow MCPS closures.
  • Please Note: It is not uncommon for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) to be closed while Montgomery College (MC) remains open.

Extended Sessions
If classes are canceled because of weather conditions or a building emergency, students and teachers will make up the lost time by coming to school for additional classes.
