Degree Works

Degree Works Overview

Degree Works is a web-based tool that allows students and advisors to review and monitor student progress toward degree completion. Degree Works organizes academic coursework into blocks of requirements to easily identify which degree requirements are complete and which degree requirements are remaining.

Students are highly encouraged to view their degree evaluation every semester to keep track of their academic progress towards degree completion. Students should also meet with a Counselor or Program Advisor to plan for upcoming semesters and for guidance throughout their academic journey. Counselors and Program Advisors can provide essential information regarding: program requirements, General Education requirements, Grade Point Average (GPA) requirements, and any other graduation requirements.

Degree Works Key Features

  • Academic Degree Evaluation: Presents a detailed view of the requirements for a Degree/Program of Study and academic progress towards completion of the degree or certificate on the student’s official record at Montgomery College.
  • What-If Evaluation: Displays academic progress towards completion of a Program of Study selected from a list of all programs offered at Montgomery College.
  • Academic History: Shows the term and earned grade of all credit courses on record at Montgomery College.
  • More Information: Lists links to tools and resources used for academic and transfer planning, registration, graduation, and other services at Montgomery College.
  • Create PDF: Provides the ability to print or save an evaluation.

Please note: Students and their Counselors or Program Advisors may use Degree Works to view progress towards meeting graduation requirements, but the evaluation is not an official certification of eligibility for graduation. Official final degree evaluations are only performed by Graduation Coordinators in the Office of Records and Registration after a student applies for graduation. Find out more!

Frequently Asked Questions

Degree Works

Degree Works is a web-based tool that you can use to monitor your academic progress toward completion of any program of study (degree or certificate) offered at Montgomery College.

Degree Works enables you to identify courses you have already completed and the courses you still need to take in order to graduate. The tool also supports other academic planning efforts aimed at helping you better prepare for future semesters.

Be sure to contact a Counselor or Program Advisor for assistance in interpreting the evaluation. This evaluation is not your academic transcript. You are responsible for understanding the graduation requirements for your program, that the counselor/advisor's review is preliminary, and that final graduation certification requires an evaluation completed by the Office of Records and Registration.

Degree Works is available for use by degree-seeking or certificate students at Montgomery College. Counselors, Program Advisors, Graduation Coordinators, and other selected staff are also able to view your information in Degree Works.

Staff/Faculty: To access Degree Works, please log into MyMC and then select the 'Degree Evaluation' icon in the 'Student Information Systems' block near the top of the page.

Students: To access Degree Works, please log into MyMC.  The 'Degree Evaluation' icon is accessible from the 'Counseling and Advising' or 'Registration' tabs.

YES! You should meet with a Counselor or Program Advisor at least once per semester to review and update your personal academic plan for completion and to discuss course options for the upcoming semester. You should review your degree evaluation in Degree Works in preparation for any meetings focused on academic planning.

The information in Degree Works is updated nightly. Any changes made today (e.g., grade changes, courses added or dropped, or an official change to your program of study) will be shown in Degree Works by tomorrow. There is also an automatic refresh capability that will update data before a new evaluation is generated if data has changed. If you feel that your record has not updated as expected, see a Counselor or Program Advisor.

You can review Degree Works at any time. However, it is a good idea to review your degree evaluation worksheet in Degree Works:

  1. Before you meet with a Counselor or Program Advisor to discuss plans for an upcoming semester.
  2. After you register to ensure that the courses you selected apply to your requirements as expected.
  3. After your final grades for each semester are posted.
  4. Any time you change your schedule or your official program of study on record.

No. Degree Works is a snapshot of completed, in-progress, and planned courses. Registration will continue to be available through the “Registration” tab in MyMC. See how to register for classes.

Degree Evaluation

A degree evaluation is a review of past, current, and "planned" coursework that provides information on requirements necessary to earn a degree or certificate at Montgomery College.

The degree evaluation is divided into blocks displaying information about general education requirements, program requirements, and other requirements for program completion.

Each block works like a checklist with boxes that are automatically checked when a requirement is met. Look for any unchecked boxes to identify requirements that are still needed for completion.

Your degree evaluation is a tool to provide you with academic information related to your degree progress. It displays courses required and completed in your degree program. Your transcript is your official academic record and provides a chronological list of courses completed and other academic information. Learn how to access your MC transcript.

Yes. There is a printer icon located in the top right menu of the evaluation. Clicking on this icon will give you the option to save or print a PDF version of the evaluation.

The degree progress circles are tools that take the total number of check boxes on your evaluation and calculate a completion percentage. The percentage is meant as an estimate of your progress towards completion of a degree program or certificate.  Look for any unchecked boxes to identify requirements that are still needed for completion. You are encouraged to speak with a Counselor or Program Advisor to clarify any questions about your progress towards degree completion.

In order to determine your eligibility for graduation as you are nearing completion of a degree or certificate program, you will need to submit an application for graduation in order to prompt the graduation coordinator to conduct an ‘official’ degree evaluation

Degree Works looks at your requirements holistically and places each course using a “best fit” algorithm. Courses may apply to different blocks, and they may be used for different requirements as you take more courses. You are encouraged to speak with a Counselor or Program Advisor if an issue arises due to a course appearing in a different block than you expected.

  • Not Used Block: Successfully completed courses (including transfer and pre-requisite courses) that do not apply directly to the program of study used for the evaluation are listed under this block. These courses are included in the Cumulative GPA.

  • No Credit Earned Block: Courses that do not meet a grade requirement (failed, withdrawn, or audited) or are excluded due to a course repeat are listed under this block. These courses may be included in the Cumulative GPA.

  • In Progress-Planned-Pre-Registered Block: Current course enrollment and future course registrations are included in this block.

  • Exceed Maximum Allowed Block: Courses that cannot be used to satisfy program requirements, such as developmental and ELAP courses, are listed under this block.

You are encouraged to speak with a Counselor or Program Advisor to clarify any questions about these blocks.

Yes. Once the official transcript is received and processed by a Transcript Evaluator in the Office of Records and Registration, credit is posted to your official record and will appear on your degree evaluation soon after.

There could be several reasons. One is that Degree Works may not have refreshed since a change was made. Second, there could be some paperwork that is still in process. For example, if you submitted a change of program of study form to the Office of Records and Registration, it is possible it has not been processed yet.

If neither of these reasons apply to your situation, you are encouraged to speak with a Counselor or Program Advisor.

If a course waiver or substitution was approved, the Office of Records and Registration will record the exception to the requirement(s). The completed course will fulfill the requirement, and an additional note will appear on the evaluation that explains why the exception was entered.

This is a wild card in Degree Works.

  • If the @ symbol appears before course numbers (e.g., 12 Credits in @ 2@), you can take any course at the 200-level).

  • If the @ symbol appears after a subject prefix (e.g., 3 Credits in ASTR @ or BIOL @), you can take any course with the subject prefix (e.g., any course in Astronomy-ASTR or Biology-BIOL).

Yes! The “What-If” evaluation allows you to explore how your courses (completed or in progress) will apply to requirements for different programs of study offered at Montgomery College. You may run a “what-if analysis” by clicking on the “What-If” link available from the degree evaluation worksheet.
